Playing piano behind your own voice requires a completely different approach than solo classical or pop playing. Instead of getting stuck in repetitive chord bashing, this intensive equips you with the exact tools needed to effectively support your singing and build professional song arrangements.
What We Cover in the Intensive
1. Piano Accompaniment & Keyboard Technique
- Tasteful Chord Voicings: Learn which voicings to play, where to place them on the keyboard, and how to avoid cluttering your vocal frequency range.
- Left-Hand Rhythm & Interplay: Master rhythm patterns, bassline grooves, and dynamic interplay between your left hand and vocal phrasing.
- Chord Embellishments: Use 9ths, suspensions, passing tones, and subtle fills to instantly dress up basic chord progressions.
2. Songwriting & Arrangement Architecture
- Tension & Release: Discover how to manipulate dynamics and harmonic density to build emotional climaxes in your arrangements.
- Harmonic Cohesion: Understand which chords fit naturally together and how to transition seamlessly between verses, choruses, and bridges.
- Building Full Arrangements: Take a simple 2-bar motif or vocal melody and expand it into a full-fledged, performance-ready piano arrangement.
Format, Schedule & Expectations
Five 2-Hour Sessions
Live, interactive Zoom sessions held across 3 weeks (10 total hours of direct instruction).
5 Songs Workshop
We discuss, analyze, and arrange 5 songs throughout the intensive—bring your own original songs, favorite covers, or write new material directly in class.
Practice Expectation
Students are expected to practice 1 to 2 hours per day between sessions to get the maximum benefit from the material.
Eligibility
Open to all skill levels (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) for ages 12 and up.
About Your Instructor: Floris Boere
Floris Boere holds a Master of Music in Jazz Piano from New York University (NYU) and is a certified Steinway & Sons Educational Partner with 20+ years of private teaching experience.
In addition to his academic background, Floris has recorded multiple records and performed live with a wide range of artists—including Apollo Theater winner Matthew Hashimoto and pop artist Born Crain—as well as bands like Rexford and Bad Business. He has written, co-written, and arranged dozens of pop and rock tracks and accompanied singers across all genres.
