About Me

My name is Floris Boere. I’m a 37-year-old pianist and teacher with nearly two decades of experience. Since I started messing around on my older brother's keyboard by myself, I've been into piano improvisation. I hold a Master’s degree in Jazz Piano from New York University, where I also taught as an Adjunct Faculty member. In addition to performing and touring with various rock and pop bands and recording my own jazz record, I’m passionate about composing and sharing my love for music through teaching.

Unlike many traditional piano teachers, I focus on Contemporary styles, including Pop, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Latin, Folk, and Indie. My lessons take place over Zoom, where high-quality audio and screen-sharing make learning seamless. I offer piano instruction for adults as well as children. Each session is recorded, giving students a valuable tool to revisit and refine their playing.

faq

What are the benefits of online lessons versus in-person lessons?
Floris: Learning from home on your own instrument, flexible scheduling, lesson recordings for review, seeing notes and chords on screen, and no travel—more time for practice.
I don’t have a piano, but I have a keyboard. Is that okay?
Floris: Absolutely! As long as your keyboard has at least 76 keys.
Do I need to sign up or pay for the first class?
Floris: No, the first class is completely free, no strings attached.
I don’t have an instrument yet. Can you advise me on what to buy?
Floris: Of course! Just send me a message through the contact form below.
How long does the first lesson usually take?
Floris: About 45–60 minutes. We’ll discuss your goals and start working on a song.
Do you teach music theory?
Floris: Yes! I gradually introduce music theory during lessons, yet we can also focus on it primarily if that’s what you want to learn.
Can you help me prepare for school recitals?
Floris: Absolutely! Many students perform the songs we work on at school recitals.
What kind of device can I use for lessons?
Floris: A tablet or laptop is ideal for a larger screen, but a phone can work too.
Do you teach classical music?
Floris: There are two types of piano teachers—those who specialize in classical music and those who focus on other styles. With my training (bachelor's and master's degrees) in jazz, blues, pop, and rock, I don't consider myself an expert in classical music. However, I focus on teaching contemporary styles and can help students explore a wide range of genres.
Do you offer piano lessons for beginners?
Floris: Absolutely, I accept complete beginner students as well as advanced players.
I don't have a keyboard or piano, what should I get?
Floris: For keyboards, I recommend going for a model with 88 keys from the top three brands: Roland, Yamaha and Korg.
How do online piano lessons work?
Floris: The student calls in through Zoom on their tablet or laptop. Through turning on a setting called 'Original Sound for Musicians', we will be able to hear each others instruments loud and clear.
Can I listen to the music you’ve written?
Floris: Yes! My music is available on all major streaming platforms.
